According to The Hollywood Reporter, director Destin Daniel Cretton (‘Shana-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings’) will direct and write the feature film ‘Naruto’ for Lionsgate Studios. Cretton will also serve as a producer alongside Emmy Yu, Ari Arad and Avi Arad, all of whom are involved in the film adaptation of Borderlands.
A full-length Naruto film has been in development at Lionsgate since 2016. As THR specifies, Destin Daniel Cretton received the ‘blessing’ of ‘Naruto’ manga author Masashi Kishimoto after visiting Tokyo. Kishimoto said he considered Cretton the ‘perfect director’ for the film adaptation because he had read his filmography and felt the director was a master at creating ‘serious dramas about people.’
‘Naruto’ is a coming-of-age story that centres on young ninja Naruto Uzumaki. He wants to grow up and become the leader of his village, oh in the process learns that the spirit of a nine-tailed fox demon lives inside him. The story was published in the pages of the Japanese weekly Shonen Jump from 1999 to 2014.
It was also recently revealed that Destin Daniel Cretton will return to work on the sequel to Shang-Chi and the Legends of the Ten Rings. The Naruto film adaptation does not yet have a release date.
